Stnless Steel Types: SS304 vs SS316L

The SS316L variant stands out with its outstanding resistance to corrosion due to chlorides or chlorination solutions, making it particularly suitable for marine environments and chemical applications. On the other hand, SS304 is sufficient for most everyday usage environments, optimizing performance-to-cost ratios. Our stnless steel pipes find versatile use in household construction projects, water supply systems, industrial water distribution networks, and more.

Customer convenience is paramount at NORIKA; our stnless steel pipes feature marked insertion depths for clamping pipe fittings and a half-length cut mark on the 5.8m long pipes. To cater to customer needs and reduce packaging workload, we also offer SS316L in a shorter 2.9m length.

Stnless Steel - The Ultimate Material

A stnless steel alloy combined with a small amount of chromium provides superior resistance to corrosion due to its ability to resist oxidation while not affecting other metals it comes into contact with. Its low mntenance and durability make it ideal for numerous applications, especially in piping and tubing industries.

The American Iron and Steel Institute SI defines SS304 and SS316L as basic grades of stnless steel. The only practical difference between them lies in carbon content; in SS316L, the 'L' signifies it has a lower carbon level compared to SS304.

Role of Carbon Content

The low-carbon variant SS316L reduces the risk of intergranular corrosion when held at temperatures within 450-850°C for several minutes in aggressive environments. If the carbon level stays below 0.030, this type won't suffer from intergranular corrosion under such conditions.

Weldability and its Implications

There's a belief that SS316L with low-carbon content is easier to weld than standard types due to their lower strength. However, no consistent reason has been found for these differences; it might be linked to the lower strength of SS304 and ease in shaping and forming compared to higher carbon counterparts.
