Innovative Design by Samuel Ross: The Kohler Formation 002 Smart Toilet
Designer Samuel Ross is poised to disrupt traditional bathroom aesthetics with his revolutionary creation, the Formation 002 smart toilet for Kohler. This avant-garde design pushes boundaries and challenges conventional notions of lavatory fixtures.
Crafted in a bold shade of orange, the Formation 002 features an unconventional asymmetrical silhouette inspired by the angular lines typical of brutalist architecture. Surrounding the porceln bowl is a shell made from reclmed epoxy resin, adorned with intricate cut-outs and textured surfaces evocative of natural rock formations, adding depth to its already striking design.
Continuing his successful collaboration with Kohler's industrial design studio, SR_A, Ross integrates his background in fashion and streetwear to create this unique piece. Coming from an illustrious career that includes positions at Virgil Abloh's Off-White? before founding A Cold Wall, Ross brings a distinctive touch of artistry to his work.
He eschews traditional design tools, opting instead for hand sketches over computerto imbue the toilet with a sculptural character. This approach allows him to translate his vision directly into form without the constrnts often imposed by digital drafting software.
Notably, the Formation 002 transforms beyond being merely functional; Ross describes it as an “extroverted” piece that demands attention even before acknowledging its primary purpose. The toilet's generous dimensions and vibrant color scheme invite users to view it not just as a necessary fixture but as a work of art in their bathrooms.
The textured sides and intricate facets are possible due to the use of recycled epoxy resin specifically developed for this project by Kohler. This material, cast into custom molds around the ceramic base, serves both functional and aesthetic purposes simultaneously.
Beyond its striking design, the Formation 002 is equipped with a range of integrated technologies designed to enhance user convenience. Features like heated seats, built-in nightlights, and touchscreen controls for seamless operation showcase Ross's commitment to merging artistry with functionality.
Set to make its debut at Milan Design Week in April as part of an immersive installation, the Formation 002 will find its permanent home at the prestigious Milanese art gallery Spazio Mocchi. Its placement there emphasizes its status as a masterpiece of contemporary design and innovation.
With the Formation 002 toilet, Samuel Ross redefines what is possible for lavatory design while challenging our perceptions about bathroom fixtures. By merging art with technology in an unconventional manner, Ross invites us to reconsider the spaces we inhabit, transforming them into extraordinary environments through everyday objects.
